Kai Havertz may make his long-awaited return from injury as Arsenal look to secure Champions League qualification against fellow top-five hopefuls Newcastle on Sunday.

The Germany forward has been sidelined since tearing a hamstring on the club’s warm-weather training camp in Dubai in February and was expected to be ruled out for the rest of the season.

But he has made a swift recovery and, having trained this week, could be involved against the Magpies.

He looks in great shape – Arteta

Boss Mikel Arteta said: “We’re going to decide that tomorrow. He’s done certain parts of the sessions in the last two days. He looks in great shape but it’s with the medical staff and how Kai feels.

“I think his work rate, the work that he has done – a lot of credit to the all medical staff for all the work that they have done throughout the last few months, because between them they have been pushing each other.

“We know how important Kai is for us. And the fact that he looks in great shape, I think he has improved a lot of metrics that are very important for a striker to give himself the best chance and you see the transformation on him, which has been really impressive.”

Havertz has been a big miss for Arsenal, who have lacked a recognised striker since he was struck down. His absence, and that of Gabriel Jesus, have hampered the Gunners’ title hopes and their attentions have turned to returning to the Champions League after this season’s run to the semi-finals.

A win at the weekend would make sure, although a draw will most likely be enough.

Arteta looks forward to special occasion

Arteta added: “It’s been a phenomenal effort from all of them [the players] under the circumstances. The last home game is always a special occasion and it is our chance to wrap up Champions League qualification.

“A beautiful moment to say thank you to all of our supporters who have been on every journey and in every ground.

“It is maybe the biggest and best day in the season when you can say thank you to them and they can show what they think of the team.”

While Arteta received good news on Havertz, there remains concern elsewhere with Declan Rice, Gabriel Martinelli, Jurrien Timber and Leandro Trossard all doubtful.

Mikel Merino is suspended following his red card in the 2-2 draw at Liverpool last weekend.
