Gary Lineker to quit BBC amid anti-semetism row and step back from 2026 World Cup duties

Gary Lineker is expected to confirm his departure from the BBC on Monday following an anti-semetism row with the broadcaster.

His final appearance is scheduled for next Sunday’s episode of Match of the Day, and he will no longer front the BBC’s coverage of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

According to reports, the decision to end his tenure has been reached by mutual agreement, coming shortly after Lineker issued an apology for sharing a social media post that drew accusations of anti-semitism.

The controversy sparked when Lineker re-shared a pro-Gaza video on social media that compared supporters of Israel to rats – a symbol historically associated with anti-semitic propaganda, notably in Nazi Germany.

Although the post was quickly removed, it had already attracted widespread attention, with many calling for the BBC to sever ties with the 64-year-old.

The former England striker addressed the backlash the following day, stating: “On Instagram I re-posted material which I have since learned contained offensive references.

“I very much regret these references. I would never knowingly share anything anti-semitic. It goes against everything I believe in.

“The post was removed as soon as I became aware of the issue.

“Whilst I strongly believe in the importance of speaking out on humanitarian issues, including the tragedy unfolding in Gaza, I also know that how we do so matters.

“I take full responsibility for this mistake. That image does not reflect my views.”

Despite his public apology, Lineker has now reportedly chosen to step down earlier than originally planned.

Lineker had been due to exit Match of the Day at the end of the 2024-25 season. He had also agreed to stay on for coverage of the FA Cup and the 2026 World Cup, but these plans have now been abandoned.

Having hosted the football highlights show since 1999, Lineker succeeded Des Lynam and became a central figure in the BBC’s sports programming. His £1.3 million salary made him the highest-paid on-air talent at the BBC.
