Real Madrid striker Kylian Mbappe is out of hospital after being admitted for acute gastroenteritis during the 2025 Club World Cup in the US.

France talisman Mbappe was admitted to “undergo a series of tests and follow the appropriate course of treatment” on Thursday afternoon.

The 26-year-old will “gradually return to team activity” and follow “specific medical treatment”, Los Blancos said in a statement that evening confirming Mbappe has been discharged.

The very common condition causes diarrhoea and vomiting and is usually caused by a bacterial or viral stomach bug.

Sufferers are advised to let the illness run its course, with symptoms typically lasting less than a week, according to the NHS.

Mbappe missed training on Tuesday with a fever and did not feature in Madrid’s opening 1-1 draw with Saudi team Al-Hilal at the Club World Cup on Wednesday.

Madrid play the second of their three group stage games against Mexican club Pachuca in Charlotte on Sunday (20:00 BST).

The five-time winners of the competition then face Austrian team Salzburg in Philadelphia the following Friday (02:00).

Madrid will be eliminated if they finish outside of the top two in their group. Otherwise, they will advance to a last-16 match against a team from Group G, which contains Juventus, Wydad, Manchester City and Al-Ain.

That game will take place on Tuesday, July 1 and be in Orlando at 02:00 if they are runners-up or Miami at 20:00 if they win their group.

Should they reach the quarter-finals, Madrid will face a team from Group E – Urawa Red Diamonds, Monterrey, Inter Milan or River Plate – or Group F, which features Borussia Dortmund, Ulsan, Mamelodi Sundowns and Fluminense.

That game will take place in Orlando on Friday, July 4 at 20:00 if they are runners-up or New Jersey on Saturday, July 5 at 21:00 if they win their group.

Their semi-final will be in New Jersey, taking place at 20:00 on Tuesday, July 8 if they are runners-up or at the same time on Wednesday, July 9 if they win their group.
