Defender Levi Colwill has sent a stark message to Chelsea’s new signings, insisting the club is “for winners only”.

The Blues are preparing to face Brazilian side Palmeiras in the Club World Cup quarter-finals in Philadelphia on Saturday (UK time), but announced the £60million signing of striker Joao Pedro from Brighton & Hove Albion on an eight-year deal on Wednesday.

The 23-year-old Brazilian becomes the latest addition to Enzo Maresca’s squad after already securing the services of Liam Delap, Dario Essugo and Mamadou Sarr this summer.

Teenage sensation Estevao Willian – who currently plays for Chelsea’s Club World Cup last eight opponents – will join the club once the tournament concludes, while 20-year-old Jamie Gittens is reportedly on the verge of completing a move to Stamford Bridge from Borussia Dortmund.

Colwill, who started 35 out of 38 Premier League games last season and earned his first senior international cap for England in last month’s friendly defeat to Senegal, issued a statement of intent to those coming through the doors at Stamford Bridge.

The 22-year-old said: “We all know how big this club is and how the culture of the club has always been to win. We’re just trying to reinforce that to the young boys, to the boys coming in, that this club is for winners only. That’s what we need to strive towards. That’s what we want to do together.

“Anyone that comes to Chelsea knows the history of the club. They know they are coming here to only win. We’ve got a great team and everyone’s on the same wavelength to try and win.”

Chelsea lifted the Conference League back in May and will return to the Champions League next season after securing a fourth-place finish in the Premier League.

Despite what many would deem a successful campaign last term, the defender was candid in his assessment of his own performances, saying “I am nowhere near where I would like to be” ahead of what he calls a “huge season” for both himself and the club.

Colwill said: “Defending one-v-one has been tough, but I think I’ve proved that I’m getting a bit better. I’m good at times when I’m trying to make passes and there are other times where I’ve been a bit lazy.

“It is going to be a huge season for me at Chelsea [next year]. We’re back in the Champions League too which we plan to do as well as possible. Then we’ve got the Premier League where we want to push on and do better than we did this season.

“For me, looking at the end of the season where we’ve got the World Cup, it will be a big aim to be there.”
