Former Arsenal midfielder Thomas Partey has been charged with five counts of rape and one count of sexual assault, the Crown Prosecution Service announced this afternoon.

The offences are alleged to have taken place between 2021 and 2022 when he was under contract with the North London club.

Partey’s deal at the Emirates expired earlier this week and he is now a free agent.

The CPS said the charges involve three women. The 32-year-old is scheduled to appear at Westminster Magistrates Court on August 5.

Jaswant Narwal, of the CPS, said: “The Crown Prosecution Service has today authorised the prosecution of Thomas Partey for multiple counts of rape – after carefully reviewing a comprehensive file of evidence. Our prosecutors have worked closely with officers in the Metropolitan Police who have carried out the investigation, to review the evidence and advise on the appropriate charges.

“We remind everyone that criminal proceedings are active, and the defendant has the right to a fair trial. We know there will be significant public interest in this announcement, but it is absolutely vital that there is no reporting, commentary or sharing of information online which could in any way prejudice these proceedings.”

Partey a mainstay of the Arsenal midfield

Partey made 52 appearances for Arsenal last season, earning the praise of boss Mikel Arteta, as the team finished runners-up to Premier League champions Liverpool.

Arteta said: “Consistency-wise it’s been his best season.

“The way he’s played, performed, his availability, has been exceptional and he’s a really important player for us.”

Partey joined Arsenal from Atletico Madrid in 2020 for £45million but, speaking last month, hinted he was willing to seek a new challenge this summer.

Speaking on Ghanaian television station TV3 while on international duty, he said: “The first thing is where you are happy and where you feel at home.

“At the end of the day you’ve been in football, you’ve been in different teams. Then it’s about what is your next objective and what do you want to achieve next.

“You still have to look at all this and at the end of the day we all have a family that needs money, this is [in] our mind.”

Partey – I’m an Arsenal fan

Partey has been a regular target for opposing fans over recent seasons and he admits the happiness of his family is paramount.

He added: “We are not getting younger. There are a lot of things where you have to look now with a family, where you want them to be happy.

“When you go out, nobody is going to destroy your family, these are things you have to look at. When you are young, you are just anywhere.”
